Your baby is hungry, so you take a cheeseburger and fries, or maybe a candy bar. Put them in a blender, then pour it in a baby food jar.
Of course, that’s ridiculous, and highly unhealthy. But that’s what many unsuspecting parents do every day when they open a jar of baby food.
A study of over 450 baby foods may make you throw a tantrum. Many products were thin on nutrition but high on calories and especially sugar. Baby foods are supposed to help infants advance from breastfeeding and move toward solid foods, but if they provide too much salt, sugar, unhealthy fats, or calories, they may actually lead to childhood obesity or other diseases.
One alternative is making your own baby food—without the harmful ingredients and extra calories. The extra effort will come with a big payoff for your baby—and maybe even your budget.
