A patient asked me to solve a debate with a friend, who claimed there are two types of fat in our bodies. I told her I’d be happy to weigh in.
Unfortunately, she lost the debate. Our bodies contain white fat and brown fat, and each serves a particular purpose. White fat stores energy, while brown fat actually burns calories to help keep us warm. Babies are born with a higher amount of brown fat.
So what’s the significance to you? Well, research associates higher amounts of brown fat with lower body weight. And regular exercise may actually convert white fat to brown. This could have your metabolism burning more calories, and protecting against weight gain.
Studies are continuing on the benefits of brown fat. But for now, you have another reason to keep exercising. There’s no debating the benefits of that.
